Curriculum

Specialized Attention

Everyone is unique – that’s what makes us special. Rather than a one-size-fits-all approach, we teach to the learning levels of each individual, setting goals to challenge and excite your child.

Bible

“Train a child in the way he should go, and when he is old he will not turn from it.”  NIV Prov. 22:6.

At Standing Stones Christian Academy, a Bible Curriculum is used for each level of learners. We have a virtue of the month which is used for all ages. Lessons taught are about Bile Charachters that exhibit that special virtue. Lessons will be presented utilizing a Bible reference, a key topic, a Bible story and follow-up activities.

Phonics

Standing Stones Christian Academy is proud to utilize the Zoo-Phonics Language Arts curriculum. This program uses a kinesthetic approach to learning all aspects of language arts, including vocabulary development and articulation that is based on phonics and phonemic awareness. Zoo-Phonics maximizes understanding, memory, utilization, and transference to all areas of the reading, spelling, and writing process in a playful and concrete manner.

The secret is the program’s whole brain approach, which includes “phono” (hearing), “oral” (speaking), “visual” (seeing), “kinesthetic” (moving), and tactile (touching) components.

Zoo-Phonics uses animals drawn in the shapes of the letters for ease in memory and has a related body movement for each letter. This approach cements the sounds to the shapes of the letters. Lowercase letters and their sounds are taught first, capital letters and letter names are taught later.

Educational research repeatedly supports the focus of phonics in early reading programs, as well as the educational benefits of pictorial mnemonics and kinesthetic approaches to learning.

In our Pre-K classes, students engage with activities/books that are at the proper level of challenge, and administered by teachers trained to provide the right level of support to help students succeed. Students are assessed and work one on one with the teacher based upon their specific learning level. For example, one student may be focusing on their lettersound recognition skills, while another might be working on beginning reader books. The result is perfectly fitting instruction that leads to proud and motivated readers.

Math

What’s special about Numbers Plus is that children’s mathematical learning is sequenced within activities — each activity has a built-in progression so children of different developmental and ability levels can participate together and have a positive and meaningful learning experience. Built into each activity is a sequence that alerts teachers to what children at different developmental and ability levels may do and say, with corresponding teaching strategies to individualize and scaffold learning. By actively engaging young children with materials and ideas, Numbers Plus builds on the latest knowledge from research and practice about early mathematics learning and is aligned with the standards of the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics.

Science
Our Science program features Delta Education Preschool Discovery Kits. We love these kits because they allow students to think, hypothesize, explore, conduct hands-on activities, and have fun! In our “Body and Senses” Discovery Kit, students describe their bodies from head to toe, inside and out, using pictures, words, songs, and actions. They examine fingerprints, construct skeletons, and listen to their hearts and lungs. Using different measures, they investigate body growth and experiment with body movement. Children use the five senses to observe and explore.

Social Studies

Our Social Studies program helps children understand people and how they relate to others and the world around them. Students develop a heightened sense of themselves, their families, and their communities. Our curriculum lets students explore the world around them and what make them unique.
